A personal view of
Clayton Sinyai a member of the Catholic Labor
Network (USA)
In
the 1960s Prime Minister Harold Wilson spent about US$10 Billion (in
today's currency) from the British Exchequer to assume public ownership
of Britain's steel industry. In 1982, President Francois Mitterand
incited massive capital flight when his new Socialist government
purchased most of France's basic industry for less than US$15 Billion.
But comes now US President George W. Bush and with a plan to dwarf
these great nationalizations, extending nearly US$1 trillion in funds
and loan guarantees to acquire a bankrupt insurer, shares in several
wobbly banks, and perhaps a million home mortgages of questionable
value. I, for one, wish my Treasury secretary could have held out for
at least a few tangible assets.

Hi, you have heard about
the crisis in Burma. Burma is ruled by one
of the worst military dictatorships in the world. This week Buddhist
monks and nuns began marching and chanting prayers to call for democracy.
The protests spread and hundreds of thousands of Burmese people joined
in -- they've been brutally attacked by the Military regime, but still
the protests are spreading.
I just signed a petition
calling on Burma's powerful ally China and the UN Security Council to
step in and pressure Burma's rulers to stop the Killing. The petition
has exploded to over 200,000 signatures in a few days and is being advertised
in newspapers around the world, delivered yo the UN secretary general,
and broadcast to the Burmese people by radio. We're trying to
get to 1 million signatures this week, please sign below and tell everyone!

from Ray Turner, NEC Representative, Liverpool
Can I take you back to the summer of 1976 when inflation was running at nearly 20% and companies were closing at the rate of two a week. Unemployment was touching 15% and the trades unions were at the peak of their power, or at least that is what the government at the time told us! Imagine the scene in a tiny dingy smoke filled room in a large factory in Liverpool. The room is used at the concession of management by the shop stewards’ committee and there is a heated discussion going on about what action should be taken to avoid a complete walk out of 2,000 production workers in a dispute over 5 men not being paid the correct bonus. In the midst of all this mayhem in walks a little bloke in a long mac and beret accompanied by another member of the committee.

The MCW is calling for a campaign to reclaim control over our time and is set against the backdrop of socio-economic, political and policy changes over recent decades, which have sought to advance ‘flexibility' as a necessity for a dynamic and free market as well as a creator of jobs. However the cost of ‘flexibility' in the labour market is that more and more of us have to work "all the hours God sends".
The MCW has identified workers experiencing long and intense hours of work within their employment. Within this intensification of work comes the need for services to be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The UK is noted for its greater variety of work-time arrangements in comparison with most other EU countries.
COPIES ARE AVAILABLE AT MCW-HEADQUARTERS AT THE PRICE OF 6 £ + postage and packing

Paul Edwards reports from a recent visit in the USA
I was staying in North Virginia in a place called Falls Church, probably due to all the Churches around there!! Falls Church is just south of the District of Columbia in which is situated Washington, known locally as the ‘District’. I was staying with a guy called Clayton and his family. He works for a labourer’s trades union organising in the construction industry. The membership is increasingly coming from Latino workers.
